How to convert a PDF to JPG or PNG: pick the quality, choose pages and keep the text sharp

A PDF page is not made of pixels until you turn it into a picture. Here is how the quality setting works, when to choose JPG and when PNG, how to convert only some pages, and what to do when the pictures come out too large.

You need page 3 of a PDF as a picture to put in a slide, post on social media or upload to a form that only takes JPG. A screenshot works, but it is usually blurry and the edges are never quite right. Converting the page properly takes a minute and gives you a clean, sharp image. The choices are few: the quality, the format and which pages.

Why the quality setting matters

A PDF page is a description of text and shapes, not a grid of dots. To make a picture, the page has to be drawn at some size, and the quality setting is that size. A page drawn small gives a small picture that looks fuzzy when you zoom in. A page drawn larger gives a bigger, crisper picture.

At Normal (1×), an A4 page comes out at about 595 × 842 pixels. High (2×) doubles each side and Very high (3×) triples it. More pixels means sharper text, but also a bigger file.

SettingA4 page comes out at aboutGood for
Normal (1×)595 × 842 pxA quick look, chat previews, thumbnails
High (2×)1190 × 1684 pxMost uses: slides, social posts, forms, reading on a phone
Very high (3×)1785 × 2526 pxSmall print, detailed drawings, printing a page or a poster

Sizes are for a standard A4 page. A US Letter page is slightly wider and shorter. These are the page’s natural size at each multiplier, not a fixed rule.

Pixels across one A4 page at each setting
Normal 1×
595 px
High 2×
1190 px
Very high 3×
1785 px

Each step makes every side 1.5 to 3 times longer, so the total pixel count grows much faster than the width does.

JPG or PNG: which one to pick

Both are normal picture formats that open everywhere. They differ in how they store the picture, and that decides how a page looks and how big the file is.

If you are unsure, pick PNG for anything with writing and JPG for a photo page that has to be small.

  • Letters have clean edges
  • Ideal for forms, notes and slides
  • File can be several times larger
JPGSmaller file
  • Great for photo pages
  • Easy to fit under an upload limit
  • Tiny smudges may appear near small text

Neither is wrong. It depends on whether the page is mostly writing or mostly picture.

Every page is drawn on a white background first, so a PDF with a see-through background will not give you a transparent picture. If you need to remove a background from the result, use the Background Remover, and read what works and what does not.

Step by step

  1. Open the PDF to Image Converter and choose your PDF.
  2. Pick the Quality. Leave it on High (2×) if you are not sure.
  3. Pick the Format: PNG or JPG.
  4. In Pages, leave all, or type the ones you want, such as 3, 1-4 or 2, 5, 8-.
  5. Press Convert to images and download each page, or all of them.
Choose a PDF, set the quality and format, then press Convert to images.Open PDF to Image Converter

The pictures are named after your file and the page number, for example notes-page-1.png, notes-page-2.png, so they sort in the right order in a folder.

How to write the page list

You typeYou get
all (or leave it)Every page
3Only page 3
1-4Pages 1, 2, 3 and 4
1, 4, 7Pages 1, 4 and 7
8-Page 8 to the last page

Separate parts with commas. If the tool cannot read something, it tells you the format to use.

When the pictures are too big

A 3× PNG of a busy page can run to several megabytes. If a form or website rejects it, work in this order:

  1. Switch to JPG. This alone usually cuts the size a lot.
  2. Drop to High (2×) if you used 3×.
  3. Shrink the picture with the Image Resizer, as explained in how to resize an image to exact pixels.
  4. Compress to a target size with Compress Image to Exact KB, which is covered in how to compress an image to 20 KB, 50 KB or 100 KB.

Things to know

Private by design

A PDF is often an ID, a result, a bill or a signed form. The converter draws each page in your browser and never uploads the file. That also makes it quick: there is no waiting for a file to travel to a server and back.
