How to extract pages from a PDF: keep only the pages you need, in any order, and save them as a new file

A 40-page statement when the bank wants page 3, a contract when you only need the signature page, a textbook chapter for a friend. Here is how to pull out exactly the pages you want, how the page list is read, why the order you type is the order you get, and the one spacing mistake that gives you the wrong file.

Most PDFs hold more than the person asking for them needs. The portal wants only the pages with your marks. The landlord needs the signed page of the agreement, not the other fourteen. A friend asked for one chapter of a long scan. Sending the whole file is slow, heavy and often careless, because the pages you did not mean to share travel along. Extracting pages means typing the numbers you want and getting a new, smaller PDF with just those.

How to extract pages from a PDF, step by step

  1. Open the Extract PDF Pages tool.
  2. Choose your PDF, or drop it onto the box.
  3. In Pages to keep, type the pages you want. The box starts with 1-3 and shows e.g. 1-3, 5, 8- as a hint.
  4. Press Extract pages.
  5. Read the note under the button, which says how many pages were saved out of the total, then download the file.
Choose the PDF, type the pages to keep, and press Extract pages.Open Extract PDF Pages

How the page list is read

Single pages, ranges and mixtures all work, separated by commas, spaces or semicolons. Page 1 is the first page of the file. Here is what each entry gives on a 10-page PDF.

You typePages in the new fileCount
1-31, 2, 33
1-3, 5, 8-1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 9, 107
-31, 2, 33
8-8, 9, 103
5, 25, then 22
5-15, 4, 3, 2, 15
4, 44, then 4 again2

A dash with nothing after it, like 8-, runs to the last page. A dash with nothing before it, like -3, starts from page 1. Leaving the box empty, or typing all, keeps every page.

A 12-page file, `1-3, 5, 8-` typed
8Pages saved1, 2, 3, 5, then 8 to 12
4Pages left out4, 6 and 7 are skipped
-extractAdded to the namereport.pdf becomes report-extract.pdf
0UploadsThe file stays on your device

The note under the button would read “Saved 8 of 12 pages.” In the new file the pages are simply numbered 1 to 8.

The order you type is the order you get

The tool does not sort your list. It copies the pages one by one in the sequence you write them. That makes it a quiet little page reorderer as well.

Four things the order lets you do
Move a page to the frontType 7, 1-6, 8- and page 7 becomes the first page.
Reverse a sectionType 5-1 and pages 5 to 1 come out backwards. Useful for a scan fed in the wrong order.
Repeat a pageType 3, 3, 3 for three copies of page 3 in one file.
Pick out of sequenceType 9, 2, 14 for exactly those pages, in exactly that order.

For moving many pages around, the PDF Page Organizer is a better fit. For quick one-off reordering, typing the order here is faster.

The spacing mistake that gives you the wrong file

Spaces are separators, just like commas. So if you write 1 - 3 with spaces around the dash, the tool sees three separate pieces: 1, a lone -, and 3. A lone dash means “from page 1 to the last page”. On a 10-page file, 1 - 3 quietly produces page 1, then every page, then page 3: twelve pages instead of three.

One space changes everything (10-page file)
`1-3`3 pages
  • Pages 1, 2 and 3
  • Exactly what you meant
  • No spaces around the dash
`1 - 3`12 pages
  • Page 1, then all ten pages, then page 3
  • The note says “Saved 12 of 10 pages.”
  • Looks like it worked, but the file is wrong

Always read the note under the button. If the saved count is not what you expected, check the spaces.

The same habit protects you in the sibling tools, such as Delete PDF Pages and Rotate PDF, which read page lists the same way.

Common jobs and what to type

JobTypeWhy
Only the first page of a statement1One page out of many
The signature page of a 15-page agreement15Name the last page by its number
A chapter from page 42 to 5742-57One range
Cover, contents and the last page1-2, 30A range plus a single page
Everything except page 4 of 101-3, 5-10For a single removal, delete is quicker
The first half of a 20-page file1-10Then repeat with 11- for the second half

To cut a file into several equal files in one go, the Split PDF tool and its guide are made for that.

Sharing less is safer

Extracting is also a privacy habit. If a bank statement has your transactions on page 2 and the figure the lender needs on page 1, send page 1. If a rent agreement carries ID details on its last page, think before you send the whole thing. The pages you leave out cannot leak.

Do this before the file leaves your device, and keep your original for yourself. For anything sensitive, finish by adding a password and send the password by a different route. If you want to clean hidden details such as the author name from the new file too, the PDF Metadata Remover does that.

What the new file keeps, and what may change

  • The pages you chose come across with their text, pictures and layout.
  • Document-wide extras, such as bookmarks and the title, belong to the whole file rather than to a page, so they may not carry over. Check the result if you rely on them.
  • File size usually drops when you keep fewer pages. If the new file is still too big for an upload, use the PDF Compressor and read how to get under an upload limit.
  • Your original is untouched. The new file has its own name, so nothing is overwritten.
  • Locked files need unlocking first. If the PDF asks for a password to open, use Unlock PDF, then come back.

Mistakes that waste a second try

  • Spaces around the dash, as described above.
  • A page number past the end. Page 15 of a 12-page file gives the message “Page numbers must be between 1 and 12.”
  • Letters or words. Only digits, dashes, commas, spaces and semicolons are understood, and the tool says which piece it could not read.
  • Counting the printed page labels. A report whose paper page “1” is the third sheet of the PDF has that page at position 3. The tool counts the position in the file, the same as your viewer’s page counter.
  • Extracting before fixing. If some pages are sideways, rotate them first. If you are combining files, merge them first so the page numbers are in one place.

On a phone

Nothing changes on a phone. Tap the box to pick the PDF from your files, type the pages, tap the button and save the result. Because the file is handled inside the browser, nothing is sent over your connection, so it also copes with a slow network once the page has loaded.

Questions people ask

How do I extract pages from a PDF for free?

Open the Extract PDF Pages tool, choose your file, type the pages you want to keep, such as 1-3, 5, and press Extract pages. Download the new file. Your original is not changed, and the new copy has “-extract” added to its name.

pdf se page alag kaise kare?

Extract PDF Pages tool kholiye, apni PDF chuniye, Pages to keep mein woh pages likhiye jo chahiye jaise 1-3, 5, aur Extract pages dabaiye. Naya file download hoga jisme sirf wahi pages honge. Asli file waisi hi rahegi.

How do I extract just one page from a PDF?

Type that single page number, for example 4, and press Extract pages. You get a one-page PDF. The page number counts the position in the file, not any number printed on the paper.

Can I change the order of pages while extracting?

Yes. The new file follows the order you type. Typing 5, 2 gives page 5 first and then page 2, and typing 5-1 reverses pages 5 to 1. You can also repeat a page by typing it more than once.

Why did I get more pages than I asked for?

You most likely put spaces around a dash, such as 1 - 3. Spaces count as separators, and a lone dash means from page 1 to the last page. Write ranges as 1-3 with no spaces, and check the saved count in the note.

What is the difference between Extract and Delete PDF Pages?

Extract keeps the pages you type and drops the rest. Delete removes the pages you type and keeps the rest. Choose Extract when you want a few pages out of many, and Delete when you want to remove a few from a file you mostly need.

Does extracting pages change the original PDF?

No. The tool builds a new file with “-extract” in its name and leaves the original as it was. Keep the original if you may need the other pages later.

Is it safe to extract PDF pages online?

It is safest when the file stays on your device. The Extract PDF Pages tool works in your browser, so your document is not uploaded.
