A customer sees your shop on Instagram and wants to ask about a price. If they have to copy your number, save it as a contact, open WhatsApp and search for you, many will give up. A WhatsApp link removes all of that. One tap opens a chat with you, and the first message can be typed already.
What a WhatsApp link is made of
A WhatsApp link is just a web address with a phone number in it. When someone taps it, their phone opens WhatsApp (or WhatsApp Web on a computer) with a chat to that number, ready to type.
- 1Start with the address
https://wa.me/ - 2Add the full numberCountry code and number, digits only:
919876543210 - 3Add a message (optional)A question mark, then
text=and the encoded message:?text=Hi%20there - 4The finished link
https://wa.me/919876543210?text=Hi%20there
The %20 stands for a space. Without a message, stop after the number.
The country-code mistake
The most common failure has nothing to do with the link format. People type their ten-digit Indian mobile number and leave out the country code. The link is still built, but it now points to a number that is not yours, or to nobody.
- No country code
- Opens a chat with a different number
- Easy to miss, since the link still looks fine
- 91 for India, then the ten digits
- No plus sign, spaces or dashes
- Opens a chat with you
The generator only checks that the number has between 8 and 15 digits, so a ten-digit number passes. Always include the country code yourself, and test the link.
| Country | Code | Example start |
|---|---|---|
| India | 91 | 91 98765 … |
| United States and Canada | 1 | 1 415 … |
| United Kingdom | 44 | 44 7700 … |
| United Arab Emirates | 971 | 971 50 … |
| Pakistan | 92 | 92 300 … |
| Bangladesh | 880 | 880 17 … |
| Saudi Arabia | 966 | 966 50 … |
| Australia | 61 | 61 4 … |
Write the code first, then the number without any leading zero. If a number is normally written starting with 0 locally, drop that 0 once the country code is in front.
Adding a ready-made message
A pre-filled message turns a blank chat into a useful one. The person only has to press send, and you already know what they were looking at. Good messages are short and name the thing:
- “Hi, I saw your wedding photography package on Instagram. Is 14 December free?”
- “Hello, I would like to order the chocolate cake from your menu.”
- “Hi, I need a quote for 200 printed T-shirts.”
Spaces, line breaks, question marks and emoji cannot sit in a web address as they are, so they are converted to codes. A space becomes %20, and a question mark becomes %3F. You do not need to do this yourself. The generator handles it, and the result still reads fine to the person who opens the link.
Where to use the link
| Where | How |
|---|---|
| Instagram bio or Linktree | Paste the link as your website or a button |
| Facebook page or Google Business profile | Use it as the contact or booking link |
| Your website | A “Chat with us” button that links to it |
| Email signature | A “WhatsApp us” line |
| Printed card, flyer or shop board | Turn the link into a QR code people can scan |
| Ads and QR posters | One scan opens a chat with the message ready |
For printed material, test the QR code with two different phones before you print a hundred.
If you want to know how a QR code can carry a link, what is inside the black squares of a QR code explains it. If you plan to count how many people come from each place, keep in mind that a WhatsApp link opens an app, so it will not carry UTM parameters into your analytics the way a website link does. Use a different link, or a different pre-filled message, for each place you advertise, so the first message tells you where the person came from.
Check before you share
- Tap the finished link on your own phone. It should open a chat with the right number.
- Check the message reads well and nothing is cut off.
- Try it from a second phone, or ask a friend, because your own phone may open your own chat differently.
- Make sure the number is one you actually answer, ideally a WhatsApp Business number for a shop or service.
Private by design
The link is built on your device, in your browser. The number and message you type are not sent to a server to create it. The link itself, once you put it on a public page, is of course visible to anyone who sees that page.

Questions people ask
How do I create a WhatsApp link?
Open the WhatsApp Link Generator, type the full number with the country code and no plus or spaces, add a message if you like, and press Create link. Copy the wa.me link and share it.
whatsapp link kaise banaye?
WhatsApp Link Generator kholiye, country code ke saath poora number likhiye, jaise India ke liye 919876543210, chahe to message bhi likhiye aur Create link dabaiye. Jo wa.me link bane use copy karke share kar dijiye.
How can I message someone on WhatsApp without saving their number?
Make a wa.me link with their number and open it. WhatsApp opens a chat with that number straight away, with no need to add them to your contacts first.
What is the wa.me link format?
It is https://wa.me/ followed by the full number with country code in digits only. To add a message, put ?text= after the number and then the message, with spaces written as %20.
Why does my WhatsApp link open the wrong chat?
The country code is probably missing. A ten-digit Indian number must start with 91. Also remove the plus sign, spaces, dashes and any leading zero, then test the link again.
How do I add a pre-filled message to a WhatsApp link?
Type the message in the Message box of the generator. It is added to the link as ?text= with the message encoded, so spaces and symbols work correctly. The person can still edit it before sending.
Can I put a WhatsApp link in my Instagram bio?
Yes. Paste the wa.me link as your website link, or add it to a link-in-bio page. Many shops also turn it into a QR code for posters and cards.
Is it safe to use a WhatsApp link generator?
It is safest when the link is built on your own device. The WhatsApp Link Generator on Toolcloak works in your browser and does not send your number to a server. Remember that a public link shows your number to anyone.
