A biodata is often the first thing a family sees of you. It gets forwarded on WhatsApp, printed at a relative’s house and read in two minutes at a tea table. A messy one, with missing details or the wrong order, makes people ask questions you should have answered for them. A clear one does its job quietly. Here is what a good biodata holds, how to write each line, and what to think twice about before you send it out.

> **In short**
> - **Sections in order:** personal details, education and profession, family, contact, and a short “about me”.
> - **Be specific and consistent.** Height as 5 ft 4 in, income as ₹9 lakh a year, date of birth in full.
> - **Think about privacy.** Leave the full home address and your own phone number off a document that will be forwarded widely.
> - **Save as a PDF,** add a photo as a separate page if you want one, and consider a password.

## The sections a biodata needs

**Four blocks, in this order**

| Box | What it means |
| --- | --- |
| Personal details | Name, date of birth, time and place of birth, height, complexion, diet, religion, caste or community, gotra, rashi if you want to share it. |
| Education and profession | Highest degree, college if you wish, occupation, employer or city, and annual income. |
| Family details | Father’s and mother’s names and work, number of brothers and sisters, and whether they are married. |
| Contact and about | A contact number for the family and a short paragraph about you and what you are looking for. |

*Many families add native place or family background in the family block. Keep it factual and short.*

Try it: [Marriage Biodata Maker (Free PDF)](https://toolcloak.com/tools/biodata-maker). Fill in your details, pick a theme colour, preview the biodata and print or save it as a PDF. Nothing is uploaded.

The builder fills a framed page with a heading, your name, and four titled sections. Any section where every line is empty is dropped, so you are not left with blank rows. The heading line is yours to change: the sample shows a traditional invocation, but you can put a different line, a symbol of your own faith, or leave it plain.

## How to write each line well

| Item | Write it like this | Avoid |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Date of birth | 14 March 1999 | 14/3/99, which can be read two ways |
| Time and place of birth | 06:30 AM, Jaipur | Leaving out the time if a horoscope is expected |
| Height | 5 ft 4 in (see the [cm to feet guide](/articles/cm-to-feet-and-inches-how-tall-is-170-cm-the-formula-a-height-chart-and-the-5-7-decimal-mistake)) | 5.4, which means something else |
| Education | MBA (Finance), name of the college | Only “graduate” |
| Occupation | Financial Analyst, Mumbai | “Job” or “service” |
| Annual income | ₹9 lakh per annum | A monthly figure with no label, or an unclear number |
| Father and mother | Mr. Rajesh Sharma (Businessman) | Names with no occupation |
| Siblings | 1 brother (unmarried) | “Family is happy”, which tells nothing |

*Use the same format everywhere on the page so it reads at a glance.*

- **Age.** If you prefer to show it, work it out exactly with the [age calculator guide](https://toolcloak.com/articles/how-to-calculate-your-exact-age-in-years-months-and-days-and-why-leap-years-and-cut-off-dates-matter).
- **Income.** Write it in lakh with the ₹ sign. For a long figure, the [lakh and crore format guide](https://toolcloak.com/articles/lakh-and-crore-number-format-how-indian-commas-work-and-how-to-convert-to-million-and-billion) shows how the commas fall.
- **Diet and habits.** One honest line, such as “Vegetarian”, saves a phone call.

## Writing the “about me” paragraph

Three or four sentences are enough. Say who you are, what you do, what matters to you and what kind of partner and family you are hoping for. Skip long lists of ideal qualities. They read as a checklist, not as a person.

**The same paragraph, two ways**

| Vague | Specific |
| --- | --- |
| Says nothing | Remembered |
| Simple, caring, family-oriented | Works as a financial analyst and loves cooking for family on Sundays |
| Looking for a suitable match | Wants to continue working and values an equal partnership |
| No detail anyone can remember | Looking for someone kind, open-minded and settled in the same city |

*Use words that describe you, not words that any biodata could contain.*

## What to leave out, and why it matters

A biodata gets screenshotted, forwarded and printed. You lose control of it once it leaves your phone. Think of what you are comfortable having seen by people you have never met.

- **Full home address.** Write the city or locality, and give the street address later, once both families are talking.
- **Your personal phone number.** Use a parent’s or a family contact number if you prefer.
- **ID numbers,** account details or property documents, ever.
- **Photos with a location.** Pictures can carry hidden location data. See [your photo may be carrying your home address](https://toolcloak.com/articles/your-photo-may-be-carrying-your-home-address) before you share one.
- **Anything you would not say in a first meeting.** If it is not true or not settled, do not put it in writing.

> **Be careful with who you send it to:** Fraudsters sometimes collect biodatas from matrimonial groups and use the details to pose as relatives or to build false identities. Share it with people you know or with a verified platform, and meet the family before sharing documents or money.

## Add a photo, then protect the PDF

**From biodata to a safe, shareable file**

1. **Save the biodata as PDF.** In the print window, choose Save as PDF.
2. **Prepare a photo page.** Use the [passport photo guide](https://toolcloak.com/articles/how-to-make-passport-size-photos-at-home-35-by-45-mm-2-by-2-inch-and-a-print-sheet-that-costs-almost-nothing) for a clean photo and the [JPG to PDF guide](https://toolcloak.com/articles/how-to-convert-jpg-to-pdf-and-combine-several-photos-into-one-pdf-on-phone-or-laptop) to turn it into a page.
3. **Join the pages.** Combine them with the [merge PDF guide](https://toolcloak.com/articles/merging-pdfs-without-posting-your-documents-to-a-stranger).
4. **Reduce and protect.** Keep it small with the [PDF compression guide](https://toolcloak.com/articles/how-to-compress-a-pdf-why-files-are-so-big-and-how-to-get-under-an-upload-limit), and add a password in the Protect PDF tool.

*The biodata maker does not place a photo inside the page. Adding it as a separate page keeps the layout clean.*

A password stops a forwarded file from being opened by anyone who does not have it. If you later need to remove the password from your own file, see the [unlock PDF guide](https://toolcloak.com/articles/how-to-remove-a-password-from-a-pdf-when-you-know-it-and-what-to-do-when-you-do-not). To share on WhatsApp, a link that opens a chat is in the [WhatsApp link guide](https://toolcloak.com/articles/how-to-make-a-whatsapp-link-that-opens-a-chat-with-a-ready-message-no-need-to-save-the-number).

## A quick checklist before you send it

1. Read every line aloud once. Typos in a name or a date are the most common mistake.
2. Check the page fits on one A4 sheet and prints cleanly.
3. Make sure the numbers match what you will say in person.
4. Ask a parent or a friend to read it as a stranger would.
5. Share it only through a channel you trust, and keep an unlocked copy for yourself.

## Frequently asked questions

### Should I put my address and phone number on a biodata?

It is safer to give the city or locality and a family contact number. Full addresses and personal numbers can be misused when a biodata is forwarded widely.

### How do I add a photo to the biodata?

Make the biodata a PDF, turn your photo into a one-page PDF, and merge the two. This keeps the biodata layout clean and lets you place the photo page where you want.

### How should I write height in a biodata?

In feet and inches, such as 5 ft 4 in, or in cm. Do not write 5.4, as a decimal in feet means something different.

### Is it okay to mention income in a biodata?

Many families expect it. Write the annual figure with a label, such as ₹9 lakh per annum, and use a round, honest number.

### Can I use a biodata format in Word?

Yes, but a PDF keeps the layout the same on every phone. You can print the biodata from a browser to PDF, which also keeps the text selectable.

### Is it safe to make a biodata online?

It is safest in a tool that runs in your browser and does not upload what you type. After you save the PDF, share it only with people you know and consider password-protecting it.
