# How to rotate a PDF and save it permanently: fix sideways scans, one page or all pages

> You turn the page in your viewer, close the file, open it again and it is sideways once more. Here is why that happens, how to save the rotation into the file itself, which direction to pick, and how to turn only the pages that need it.

A sideways page is one of the most irritating small problems in a PDF. The scanner fed a sheet in the wrong way. A phone camera saved a photo of a form on its side. Someone merged a landscape page into a portrait file. You can tilt your head, or you can press the rotate button in your viewer, but the next person who opens the file still sees it sideways. The fix that sticks is to change the file itself, and it takes one step.

> **In short**
> - The [Rotate PDF](https://toolcloak.com/tools/rotate-pdf) tool turns pages **90° clockwise, 180° or 90° counter-clockwise** and saves a new file.
> - In **Pages**, type `all` or a list such as `2, 4-6` to turn only some pages. It starts with `all`.
> - The rotation **adds to whatever the page already had**, so turning twice by 90° gives 180°.
> - Your original stays as it was. The new copy is named with “-rotated”.
> - The tool works in your browser, so the file is **not uploaded**.

## Why rotating in the viewer does not stick

Most PDF viewers have a rotate button, and it is meant for reading: it changes how the page is shown to you at that moment. Many of them forget it when you close the file, so the next time it opens in its old position. The file on disk has not changed, and neither has the copy you send to somebody else.

A PDF page carries a small setting that says how it should be turned when displayed. Saving a rotation means changing that setting inside the file. That is what the tool does: it writes the new turn into each page you choose and gives you a fresh copy. The words and pictures on the page are not redrawn, which is why the quality stays exactly as it was.

**Two kinds of “rotate”**

| Rotate in the viewer | Rotate and save |
| --- | --- |
| Just for your eyes | Changes the file |
| Changes how you see the page right now | Writes the turn into the PDF |
| Often forgotten when the file is closed | Opens upright for everyone |
| The copy you send is still sideways | Words and pictures are not redrawn |

*If the file is going to someone else, a printer or an upload portal, you want the second kind.*

## How to rotate a PDF, step by step

1. Open the [Rotate PDF](https://toolcloak.com/tools/rotate-pdf) tool.
2. Choose the PDF, or drop it onto the box.
3. Pick the turn in **Rotate**: 90° clockwise, 180°, or 90° counter-clockwise.
4. In **Pages**, leave `all` to turn everything, or type the pages you want.
5. Press **Rotate PDF**. The note below tells you how many pages were turned. Download the new file.

Try it: [Rotate PDF Pages](https://toolcloak.com/tools/rotate-pdf). Choose the PDF, pick the direction, choose the pages, and press Rotate PDF.

## Which direction should you pick?

Look at where the **top of the text** is pointing right now. That tells you which way to turn it.

**Match what you see to the choice**

| Box | What it means |
| --- | --- |
| Top of the text points right | The page is turned clockwise. Choose **90° counter-clockwise** to bring it back. |
| Top of the text points left | The page is turned counter-clockwise. Choose **90° clockwise**. |
| Text is upside down | Choose **180°**. Direction does not matter, a half turn is a half turn. |
| Page looks right but is landscape | Choose either 90° option if you want it portrait, then check the page in your viewer. |

*If you are not sure, try one direction and look at the result. Turning the wrong way costs you only a second try, and your original is untouched.*

## Turning only some pages

A scanned bundle often has a mix: most pages upright and a few sideways. Typing the page numbers in the **Pages** box turns only those and leaves the others alone.

| You type | Pages turned | Good for |
| --- | --- | --- |
| `all` | Every page | A whole scan that came in sideways |
| `3` | Page 3 only | One stray page |
| `2, 4-6` | Page 2 and pages 4, 5, 6 | A few sideways pages |
| `5-` | Page 5 to the last page | The back half was scanned the other way |
| `1 3 5` | Pages 1, 3 and 5 | Separate pages, spaces work too |

*Commas, spaces and semicolons all work as separators. A range that ends in a dash, like 5-, runs to the last page.*

> **There is no “odd” or “even” keyword:** If every second page is sideways, as happens with some double-sided scans, type the numbers one by one, such as `2, 4, 6, 8`. A word the tool does not know is reported back to you rather than ignored.

Page numbers count **position in the file**, the same as your viewer’s page counter. If a page numbered “1” on the paper is the third sheet of the PDF, it is page 3 here. Page numbers above the page count give a message that tells you the allowed range.

## Rotation adds up

The tool does not “set” a page to upright. It adds your turn to whatever the page already has, then wraps around at a full circle. That is useful to know if you rotate a file more than once, or if some pages were already turned by their scanner.

| Page already turned | You add 90° clockwise | You add 180° | You add 90° counter-clockwise |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| 0° | 90° | 180° | 270° |
| 90° | 180° | 270° | 0° |
| 180° | 270° | 0° | 90° |
| 270° | 0° | 90° | 180° |

*The 0° column is “upright”. Reading across, the page lands upright whenever the two turns add up to a full circle.*

**One page, rotated twice by mistake**

| When | What |
| --- | --- |
| Start | Page is sideways. The scanner left it turned 90° clockwise. |
| Try 1 | Rotate 90° clockwise. Now it is at 180°, so the page is upside down. Wrong way. |
| Try 2 | Use the original again. Start from the first file and choose 90° counter-clockwise. Upright. |

*Because each run produces a new file and leaves the original alone, starting again is easy. Keep the first file until you are happy.*

## What the tool cannot do

- **Small angles.** It turns in steps of 90°. A page scanned a few degrees crooked needs straightening, not rotating. The [Document Scanner](https://toolcloak.com/tools/document-scanner) lets you drag the four corners and flatten it.
- **Single parts of a page.** The whole page turns, not a picture or a block of text on it.
- **Mirror flips.** Rotation turns a page, it does not flip it like a mirror.
- **Locked files.** If the PDF asks for a password to open, remove it first with [Unlock PDF](https://toolcloak.com/tools/unlock-pdf), read the [guide](https://toolcloak.com/articles/how-to-remove-a-password-from-a-pdf-when-you-know-it-and-what-to-do-when-you-do-not), then rotate.

For a sideways **photo** rather than a PDF, the [Image Rotator and Flipper](https://toolcloak.com/tools/image-rotate-flip) does the same job for pictures, including flips.

## What to do next with the fixed file

Rotating is usually a middle step. The order that avoids headaches is simple: fix the orientation, then take out unwanted pages, then merge, then shrink, then lock.

**A sensible order for a messy scan**

1. **Rotate.** Make every page upright with the [Rotate PDF](https://toolcloak.com/tools/rotate-pdf) tool.
2. **Delete.** Take out blank or unwanted pages, see [how to delete pages](https://toolcloak.com/articles/how-to-delete-pages-from-a-pdf-free-remove-one-page-a-range-or-several-and-keep-the-original-safe).
3. **Merge.** Combine files if you need one document, see [merging PDFs](https://toolcloak.com/articles/merging-pdfs-without-posting-your-documents-to-a-stranger).
4. **Compress.** Fit an upload limit, see [how to compress a PDF](https://toolcloak.com/articles/how-to-compress-a-pdf-why-files-are-so-big-and-how-to-get-under-an-upload-limit).
5. **Protect.** Lock it last, see [how to password protect a PDF](https://toolcloak.com/articles/how-to-password-protect-a-pdf-free-aes-256-open-password-against-permissions-and-what-to-do-if-you-forget-it).

*Locking last matters, because most steps get harder once a password is on the file.*

If your sideways pages came from photos, the [JPG to PDF guide](https://toolcloak.com/articles/how-to-convert-jpg-to-pdf-and-combine-several-photos-into-one-pdf-on-phone-or-laptop) shows how to build a PDF that starts out the right way up.

## Frequently asked questions

### How do I rotate a PDF and save it?

Open the Rotate PDF tool, choose the file, pick 90° clockwise, 180° or 90° counter-clockwise, leave Pages as all, and press Rotate PDF. Download the new file, which opens in the new position for everyone.

### pdf ko rotate kaise kare?

Rotate PDF tool kholiye, apni PDF chuniye, direction chuniye jaise 90° clockwise, Pages mein all rakhiye aur Rotate PDF dabaiye. Naya file download hoga jo hamesha seedha khulega. Asli file waisi hi rahegi.

### Why does my PDF go back to sideways when I reopen it?

The rotate button in many viewers only changes how the page is shown to you and is forgotten when you close the file. To keep the turn, save it into the file itself with a tool like Rotate PDF.

### How do I rotate only one page in a PDF?

Type that page number in the Pages box, for example 3, instead of all. Only that page is turned and the others are left as they are. You can also type several, like 2, 4-6.

### Which way should I rotate a sideways page?

Look at where the top of the text points. If it points right, choose 90° counter-clockwise. If it points left, choose 90° clockwise. If the text is upside down, choose 180°.

### Does rotating reduce the quality of a PDF?

No. The tool changes the turn setting of each page and does not redraw the words or pictures, so the quality stays the same. The result is saved as a new file and the original is unchanged.

### Can I rotate a PDF by a small angle like 5 degrees?

No. The tool turns pages in steps of 90°. For a crooked scan, straighten it with the Document Scanner, where you can drag the corners of the page.

### Is it safe to rotate a PDF online?

It is safest when the file stays on your device. The Rotate PDF tool works in your browser, so your document is not uploaded.
