You need four photos for a form, six for an exam centre and two more for a bank. Going back to a studio each time is slow and the price adds up. The same job can be done at home. You take one clear photo, crop it to the right size, and print a sheet with many copies on ordinary photo paper or at a nearby print shop.

> **In short**
> - The [Passport Size Photo Maker](https://toolcloak.com/tools/passport-photo-maker) crops your picture to a standard size and also builds a **print sheet with many copies**.
> - Sizes built in: **35 × 45 mm**, **2 × 2 inch (51 mm)**, 25 × 35, 33 × 48, 40 × 60 and 30 × 40 mm.
> - Files are made at **300 DPI**, the usual quality for a photo print.
> - Print the sheet at **100%**, never “fit to page”, or the photos will come out the wrong size.
> - Always read your office’s photo rules. Size and background requirements differ and change.

## Start with a good photo

No tool can fix a poor photo, so ten minutes spent here saves the most trouble. The rules differ between offices, but nearly all of them want the same basics:

- **Plain, light background.** A white wall or a sheet works. No patterns, no shadow of your head on the wall.
- **Even light on your face.** Stand facing a window, so the light comes from the front. Avoid a lamp from one side.
- **Face straight to the camera** at the same height as your eyes, with a neutral expression and both eyes open.
- **Your whole head and the top of your shoulders in the frame**, with a little space around you so there is room to crop.
- **No filters, no heavy editing.** Many offices reject photos that look altered.

> **Check the rules of the office first:** The size, background colour, whether glasses are allowed and how large the face must be vary by country, exam and application, and they are updated from time to time. Read the instructions on the form or website you are applying to, and use this tool to meet them.

## Picking the size

A photo size such as 35 × 45 mm is a printed measurement. On the screen it becomes a number of pixels. At 300 DPI, which is the setting for a sharp print, the sizes work out like this:

| Preset in the tool | Printed size | Pixels at 300 DPI |
| --- | --- | --- |
| India, UK, EU, Australia style | 35 × 45 mm | 413 × 531 |
| USA style | 2 × 2 inch (51 × 51 mm) | 602 × 602 |
| Stamp size | 25 × 35 mm | 295 × 413 |
| China visa | 33 × 48 mm | 390 × 567 |
| Visa | 40 × 60 mm | 472 × 709 |
| ID card | 30 × 40 mm | 354 × 472 |

*The pixel sizes are rounded to whole pixels. If a website needs a size in pixels, these numbers are a guide, and the Image Resizer can adjust the picture afterwards.*

The size you need is written on the form. If it gives centimetres, remember that 3.5 × 4.5 cm is the same as 35 × 45 mm.

## Step by step

1. Open the [Passport Size Photo Maker](https://toolcloak.com/tools/passport-photo-maker) and choose your photo.
2. Pick the **Photo size** that matches your form.
3. Use **Zoom** to bring your face to the right size in the frame, then **Move left / right** and **Move up / down** to centre it. Leave a little space above the head.
4. Choose the **Background colour**. The default is white. This fills any gap, but it does not change the wall behind you.
5. Keep **Thin border for cutting** on if you plan to cut the photos out with scissors.
6. Choose the **Print sheet paper**: 4 × 6 inch, 5 × 7 inch or A4.
7. Download the **single photo** for online forms, and the **print sheet** for printing.

Try it: [Passport Size Photo Maker](https://toolcloak.com/tools/passport-photo-maker). Choose a front-facing photo, pick a size, adjust the crop, and download a single photo and a print sheet.

The single photo is saved as a high-quality JPG named with the size, such as `photo-passport-35x45mm.jpg`. The sheet is saved as a second JPG called `photo-print-sheet.jpg`.

## How many photos fit on a sheet

The tool places as many copies as fit on the paper, with a small gap and a margin so nothing is cut off. Here is what you get with the two most common sizes:

| Paper | 35 × 45 mm photos | 2 × 2 inch photos |
| --- | --- | --- |
| 4 × 6 inch photo paper | **6** | 2 |
| 5 × 7 inch photo paper | 9 | 6 |
| A4 paper | **30** | 15 |

*The count is shown under the sheet preview, so you always see the exact number before you download.*

**35 × 45 mm photos per sheet**

| | Photos |
| --- | --- |
| 4 × 6 inch | 6 |
| 5 × 7 inch | 9 |
| A4 | 30 |

*A 4 × 6 sheet is the cheapest way to get a small set of six. A single A4 sheet gives thirty, enough for most batches of applications.*

## Printing it correctly

Most badly sized photos are caused by the print settings, not the tool. The file is already made at the right size and resolution, so the printer has to leave it alone.

- **Print at 100% or “actual size”.** Turn off “fit to page”, “fill page” and any shrink option.
- **Match the paper to the sheet you chose.** A 4 × 6 sheet goes on 4 × 6 paper, not on A4.
- **Use photo paper** for a glossy or matt finish, or take the file to a print shop on a phone or pen drive and ask for a print of the full 4 × 6 picture at 100%.
- **Measure one printed photo** with a ruler. It should be exactly 35 × 45 mm, or whichever size you chose.
- **Cut along the thin border** with a steady hand or a paper trimmer.

**From phone to print**

1. **Take the photo.** Plain background, front light, face straight.
2. **Crop and size it.** Choose the size, zoom and centre your face.
3. **Download the sheet.** A 300 DPI JPG with the copies already laid out.
4. **Print at 100%.** Photo paper or a print shop. No “fit to page”.

*Check the first print with a ruler before you cut the whole sheet.*

## Fixing the background

The tool fills the frame with the colour you pick, but the wall behind you stays as it was in the photo. If your photo has a coloured or cluttered background, the cleanest fix is to retake it against a plain wall. If you cannot retake it, the [Background Remover](https://toolcloak.com/tools/background-remover) can help on plain backgrounds, but it works by colour, so it struggles with detailed ones. The guide on [removing a background](https://toolcloak.com/articles/how-to-remove-a-background-from-a-photo-and-save-a-transparent-png-what-works-and-what-does-not) explains when it works.

## When the form also has a file size limit

Online applications often ask for the photo under a size such as 50 KB or 100 KB, and sometimes for exact pixels. Make the photo here first, then use [Compress Image to Exact KB](https://toolcloak.com/tools/compress-image-to-kb) and read [how to compress an image to 20 KB, 50 KB or 100 KB](https://toolcloak.com/articles/how-to-compress-an-image-to-20-kb-50-kb-100-kb-or-200-kb-for-forms-and-exam-portals). For exact pixels, see [how to resize an image to exact pixels](https://toolcloak.com/articles/how-to-resize-an-image-to-exact-pixels-or-a-percentage-without-stretching-or-blurring-it). If the form wants a signature too, the [Image Cropper](https://toolcloak.com/tools/image-cropper) helps you trim it, and your picture can also become part of a [PDF](https://toolcloak.com/articles/how-to-convert-jpg-to-pdf-and-combine-several-photos-into-one-pdf-on-phone-or-laptop) when an application needs one file.

## Private by design

A passport or ID photo is one of the most personal pictures you own. The tool crops and lays out the sheet in your browser, so the photo is not uploaded to a server.

## Frequently asked questions

### How do I make a passport size photo at home?

Take a clear front-facing photo against a plain light wall. Open the Passport Size Photo Maker, choose the size, zoom and centre your face, then download the single photo and the print sheet. Print the sheet at 100%.

### passport size photo kaise banaye?

Saaf roshni mein seedhi photo kheenchiye, Passport Size Photo Maker mein photo chuniye, size jaise 35x45 mm chuniye, face ko zoom karke beech mein lagaiye aur print sheet download kijiye. Print karte waqt 100% size rakhiye.

### What is the passport photo size in mm?

A common size is 35 × 45 mm, which is 3.5 × 4.5 cm. The USA uses 2 × 2 inch, which is 51 × 51 mm. Always check the size on your own form, since it depends on the country and the application.

### What is a 35x45 mm photo in pixels?

At 300 DPI, 35 × 45 mm is about 413 × 531 pixels. A 2 × 2 inch photo is 602 × 602 pixels at the same resolution.

### How many passport photos fit on an A4 or 4x6 sheet?

With 35 × 45 mm photos, a 4 × 6 inch sheet holds 6, a 5 × 7 inch sheet holds 9 and an A4 sheet holds 30. The tool shows the exact count under the preview.

### Why do my printed photos come out the wrong size?

The printer probably shrank or stretched the sheet. Print at 100% or actual size, turn off fit to page, and use the paper size that matches the sheet you downloaded. Measure one photo with a ruler to check.

### Can I change the background colour of my passport photo?

You can pick the colour that fills the frame, but the wall behind you stays as it was. For a plain white or light background, retake the photo against a plain wall, or try a background remover on a simple background.

### Is it safe to make a passport photo online?

It is safest when your photo stays on your device. The Passport Size Photo Maker on Toolcloak works in your browser, so the picture is not uploaded to a server.
