> Draw your signature with a finger or mouse, or type your name in a handwriting font, and download a clean PNG with no white box around it. Job offer letters, rent agreements, school forms, exam portals and PDF contracts all ask the same thing: sign and send it back. Printing the page, signing and scanning is slow. What most people want is a **picture of their signature** that they can drop onto a document in seconds, with no white box around it that blocks the text underneath. That is a transparent PNG, and it takes about a minute to make.

> **In short**
> - **Draw it or type it.** Drawing looks the most like you. Typing uses a handwriting-style font and is quick.
> - **Choose a transparent background** for PDFs, Word and email. Choose **white** if a form wants a JPG.
> - **A signature image is not a legally certified digital signature.** It is fine where the other side accepts it, but some filings need a Digital Signature Certificate or Aadhaar eSign.
> - **Do not post it publicly.** Anyone can copy a picture of your signature.

## Draw it or type it?

**Two ways to make the same file**

| Draw | Type |
| --- | --- |
| Looks like you | Quick and tidy |
| Use a finger on a phone, a stylus or a mouse | Type your name, pick a style |
| Pen thickness 2 to 16 px, any ink colour | Four handwriting-style fonts to choose from |
| Undo the last stroke, or clear and try again | Good when you cannot draw smoothly |

*Many people who sign differently from how they write their name still prefer to draw, so the picture matches the signature on their bank or ID records.*

| Typed style | Feel | Good for |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Dancing Script | Flowing, casual | Emails, informal letters |
| Great Vibes | Formal, elegant, slanted | Invitations, formal letters |
| Caveat | Quick, like a pen note | Everyday documents |
| Homemade Apple | Loose, rounder cursive | Personal and creative use |

*The typed styles load from an online font library, so you need an internet connection for the preview to show.*

## Make it in five steps

**From blank box to a PNG**

1. **Pick Draw or Type.** Use the tab at the top of the tool.
2. **Set the ink.** Black or dark blue looks natural. A pen thickness of 5 to 8 px suits most signatures.
3. **Sign in the box.** Make it large and slow. On a phone, turn it sideways for more room.
4. **Choose the background.** Transparent for documents, white if a form needs a JPG.
5. **Create and download.** The picture is trimmed tight around the ink with a small margin.

*Everything runs in your browser, and the picture is not uploaded.*

Try it: [Signature Maker (Draw or Type, Transparent PNG)](https://toolcloak.com/tools/signature-maker). Draw or type your signature and download a trimmed PNG, with a transparent or white background.

**What the tool gives you**

| | Value | Note |
| --- | --- | --- |
| File type | PNG | Sharp lines, supports transparency |
| Cropping | Auto-trim | Cut to the ink plus a small margin |
| Pen thickness | 2–16 px | Thin for neat, thick for bold |
| Typed styles | 4 | Handwriting-style fonts |

*Because the image is cropped to the ink, it drops onto a document at the size you want without a big empty box around it.*

## Tips for a signature that looks good small

- **Sign bigger than you think.** The picture is usually shrunk to a few centimetres, and thin lines vanish when it shrinks.
- **Choose a slightly thicker pen** than feels natural for the same reason.
- **Use dark ink on a light background** for forms, and keep your usual style so it matches the signature on your ID and bank records.
- **Do it twice.** If the first attempt looks shaky, use Undo or Clear. A calm second try is nearly always better.

## Transparent or white background?

| Use | Pick | Why |
| --- | --- | --- |
| PDF, Word, Google Docs, email signature | Transparent | Lets the page show through, with no white rectangle over the text |
| Exam or application form that asks for JPG | White | A JPG cannot hold transparency, and a transparent PNG can turn black when converted |
| Print on a letterhead | Transparent | The paper colour shows through |
| Upload to a site that rejects PNG | White, then convert | See the next section |

*When in doubt, make both. They take seconds, and the file name tells you which is which.*

## A signature for an exam or application form

Online forms often state three things for the signature upload: the picture size in pixels or centimetres, the file size in KB and the format, usually JPG. Meeting them is three small jobs in order, each with its own guide.

**From signature PNG to a form-ready JPG**

1. **Make it on white.** Choose the white background option in the signature tool.
2. **Convert to JPG.** Use the [image format guide](https://toolcloak.com/articles/how-to-convert-png-to-jpg-jpg-to-png-and-webp-to-jpg-and-which-image-format-to-use).
3. **Resize to the size asked.** Follow the [exact pixels guide](https://toolcloak.com/articles/how-to-resize-an-image-to-exact-pixels-or-a-percentage-without-stretching-or-blurring-it).
4. **Compress to the KB limit.** The [20 KB to 200 KB guide](https://toolcloak.com/articles/how-to-compress-an-image-to-20-kb-50-kb-100-kb-or-200-kb-for-forms-and-exam-portals) shows how.

*Read the form’s instructions on size and format carefully. Different forms ask for different limits.*

If you prefer a real pen, sign on plain white paper, photograph it in good light, and use the [background remover guide](https://toolcloak.com/articles/how-to-remove-a-background-from-a-photo-and-save-a-transparent-png-what-works-and-what-does-not). Ink on white paper is exactly the kind of picture a colour-based remover handles well.

## Using the signature on documents

**Where the picture goes**

| Box | What it means |
| --- | --- |
| PDF | Place it on the signature line with the [sign PDF guide](/articles/how-to-sign-a-pdf-online-free-draw-or-type-your-signature-on-phone-or-laptop-and-when-it-is-legally-enough). Then compress or merge if needed. |
| Word and Google Docs | Insert, Pictures. Resize from a corner so it stays in proportion, and set text wrapping to “in front of text”. |
| Email signature | Insert the transparent PNG at about 150 to 200 px wide. Keep it light so it loads fast. |
| Scanned or photo documents | Make a PDF from photos with the [JPG to PDF guide](/articles/how-to-convert-jpg-to-pdf-and-combine-several-photos-into-one-pdf-on-phone-or-laptop), then add the signature. |

*After placing it, zoom in and check the signature does not cover important text or a printed line.*

## Picture of a signature versus a digital signature

**They sound alike but are not the same**

| Signature image | Certified digital signature |
| --- | --- |
| Picture | Verified |
| A drawn or typed image placed on a document | Aadhaar eSign or a Digital Signature Certificate |
| Quick, free, no identity check | Tied to your identity and to the exact file |
| Accepted where the receiver says it is fine | Needed for some government and company filings |

*The signature maker produces the left one. For anything where the law or the receiver demands a certified signature, use an approved method.*

> **Be careful what you sign, and where you put the image:** A picture of your signature can be copied by anyone who can see it. Do not post it on social media, send it with ID copies to people you do not know, or leave it on shared computers. If you must send a document with your signature, add a note such as “For rental application only” next to it, so it is harder to reuse.
