# How to convert a PDF to JPG or PNG: pick the quality, choose pages and keep the text sharp

> A PDF page is not made of pixels until you turn it into a picture. Here is how the quality setting works, when to choose JPG and when PNG, how to convert only some pages, and what to do when the pictures come out too large.

You need page 3 of a PDF as a picture to put in a slide, post on social media or upload to a form that only takes JPG. A screenshot works, but it is usually blurry and the edges are never quite right. Converting the page properly takes a minute and gives you a clean, sharp image. The choices are few: the quality, the format and which pages.

> **In short**
> - The [PDF to Image Converter](https://toolcloak.com/tools/pdf-to-images) turns each PDF page into one **PNG or JPG** file, and you can convert all pages or only the ones you name.
> - **Quality 2× (High)** is the best everyday choice. Use 3× for small print or big posters, 1× for quick previews.
> - Choose **PNG** for text, logos and line drawings, and **JPG** for photo-heavy pages and smaller files.
> - Up to **60 pages** can be converted at a time. Larger files can be done in parts.
> - It works inside your browser, so the PDF is not uploaded.

## Why the quality setting matters

A PDF page is a description of text and shapes, not a grid of dots. To make a picture, the page has to be drawn at some size, and the quality setting is that size. A page drawn small gives a small picture that looks fuzzy when you zoom in. A page drawn larger gives a bigger, crisper picture.

At Normal (1×), an A4 page comes out at about 595 × 842 pixels. High (2×) doubles each side and Very high (3×) triples it. More pixels means sharper text, but also a bigger file.

| Setting | A4 page comes out at about | Good for |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Normal (1×) | 595 × 842 px | A quick look, chat previews, thumbnails |
| High (2×) | 1190 × 1684 px | **Most uses:** slides, social posts, forms, reading on a phone |
| Very high (3×) | 1785 × 2526 px | Small print, detailed drawings, printing a page or a poster |

*Sizes are for a standard A4 page. A US Letter page is slightly wider and shorter. These are the page’s natural size at each multiplier, not a fixed rule.*

**Pixels across one A4 page at each setting**

| | Width |
| --- | --- |
| Normal 1× | 595 px |
| High 2× | 1190 px |
| Very high 3× | 1785 px |

*Each step makes every side 1.5 to 3 times longer, so the total pixel count grows much faster than the width does.*

## JPG or PNG: which one to pick

Both are normal picture formats that open everywhere. They differ in how they store the picture, and that decides how a page looks and how big the file is.

| | PNG | JPG |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Best for | Text, tables, logos, charts, line art | Pages full of photographs |
| Sharp edges around text | **Clean** | Can show faint smudges near letters |
| File size | Larger | Smaller |
| Quality | No loss | Slight loss to save space |

*If you are unsure, pick PNG for anything with writing and JPG for a photo page that has to be small.*

**Same page, two formats**

| PNG | JPG |
| --- | --- |
| Crisp text | Smaller file |
| Letters have clean edges | Great for photo pages |
| Ideal for forms, notes and slides | Easy to fit under an upload limit |
| File can be several times larger | Tiny smudges may appear near small text |

*Neither is wrong. It depends on whether the page is mostly writing or mostly picture.*

Every page is drawn on a white background first, so a PDF with a see-through background will not give you a transparent picture. If you need to remove a background from the result, use the [Background Remover](https://toolcloak.com/tools/background-remover), and read [what works and what does not](https://toolcloak.com/articles/how-to-remove-a-background-from-a-photo-and-save-a-transparent-png-what-works-and-what-does-not).

## Step by step

1. Open the [PDF to Image Converter](https://toolcloak.com/tools/pdf-to-images) and choose your PDF.
2. Pick the **Quality**. Leave it on High (2×) if you are not sure.
3. Pick the **Format**: PNG or JPG.
4. In **Pages**, leave `all`, or type the ones you want, such as `3`, `1-4` or `2, 5, 8-`.
5. Press **Convert to images** and download each page, or all of them.

Try it: [PDF to Image Converter](https://toolcloak.com/tools/pdf-to-images). Choose a PDF, set the quality and format, then press Convert to images.

The pictures are named after your file and the page number, for example `notes-page-1.png`, `notes-page-2.png`, so they sort in the right order in a folder.

### How to write the page list

| You type | You get |
| --- | --- |
| `all` (or leave it) | Every page |
| `3` | Only page 3 |
| `1-4` | Pages 1, 2, 3 and 4 |
| `1, 4, 7` | Pages 1, 4 and 7 |
| `8-` | Page 8 to the last page |

*Separate parts with commas. If the tool cannot read something, it tells you the format to use.*

## When the pictures are too big

A 3× PNG of a busy page can run to several megabytes. If a form or website rejects it, work in this order:

1. **Switch to JPG.** This alone usually cuts the size a lot.
2. **Drop to High (2×)** if you used 3×.
3. **Shrink the picture** with the [Image Resizer](https://toolcloak.com/tools/image-resizer), as explained in [how to resize an image to exact pixels](https://toolcloak.com/articles/how-to-resize-an-image-to-exact-pixels-or-a-percentage-without-stretching-or-blurring-it).
4. **Compress to a target size** with [Compress Image to Exact KB](https://toolcloak.com/tools/compress-image-to-kb), which is covered in [how to compress an image to 20 KB, 50 KB or 100 KB](https://toolcloak.com/articles/how-to-compress-an-image-to-20-kb-50-kb-100-kb-or-200-kb-for-forms-and-exam-portals).

## Private by design

A PDF is often an ID, a result, a bill or a signed form. The converter draws each page in your browser and never uploads the file. That also makes it quick: there is no waiting for a file to travel to a server and back.

## Frequently asked questions

### How do I convert a PDF to JPG?

Open the PDF to Image Converter, choose your PDF, set Format to JPG and press Convert to images. Download the page pictures one by one or all together. High (2×) quality suits most uses.

### How do I convert a PDF to PNG?

Choose PNG as the Format. PNG keeps text and line art crisp with no loss, so it is the better choice for pages that are mostly writing, though the files are larger than JPG.

### pdf ko image me kaise badle?

PDF to Image Converter kholiye, PDF chuniye, format JPG ya PNG chuniye aur Convert to images dabaiye. Har page ki alag image ban jayegi. Sirf kuch pages chahiye to Pages mein 1-3 jaise likhiye.

### How can I convert only one page of a PDF to an image?

Type the page number in the Pages box, for example 3, instead of all. You can also give a range such as 2-5, or a list such as 1, 4, 7.

### Which quality should I choose for a PDF to image?

High (2×) is the best everyday choice. Use Very high (3×) for small print or printing, and Normal (1×) for a quick preview. Higher quality gives sharper pictures but larger files.

### Is PNG or JPG better for a PDF page?

PNG is better for pages with text, tables and logos because the edges stay clean. JPG is better for pages full of photos, and it gives a smaller file.

### Is there a page limit?

Up to 60 pages can be converted at once. For a longer PDF, convert it in parts, such as pages 1-50 and then 51-100.

### Is it safe to convert a PDF to an image online?

It is safest when the file stays on your device. The PDF to Image Converter on Toolcloak draws the pages in your browser, so the PDF is not uploaded to a server.
